If you fail to plan then you plan to fail is the old saying that goes around when objectives are not met. At work when a project is delayed all eyes are on the project manager because there was either no plan or it was not executed properly. This is no different when it comes to finances. It is no good just dreaming of becoming wealthy but there needs to be a well written and actionable plan to accompany whatever your financial goal may be. Put simply, your goal just becomes a wish with no plan.
Financial Goal Setting
So to help you on you way, here’s a financial goal planning template that I personally created myself and currently use. Check it out by clicking here. I refer to it every week to see whether I am on track or not. If you find yourself falling off track (yes it will happen sometimes) then the key thing to remember is to not cheat by changing the goal but to analyse what actions you need to revise to get there. Also be TRUE to yourself on what are your priorities!
Financial Budget Planner
Also check out my financial budgeting spreadsheet to help you manage your incomings and outgoings. Click here. This is also very important as if you plan to save for lets say a deposit for a house then you need to understand where your money is going and once that is determined what action can be taken to reach the target.
In regards to financial planning some people may say “I know what I want to achieve in my head” or “I am too busy to write down a financial plan” but believe me the moment you write it down with a pen and paper (or at least electronically) then you have something tangible and physical to grasp. A written down goal makes you physically accountable to something. Better still if you have someone you trust that can hold you to account for your plan then great – I call this the accountability friend!
I hope you find these tools a useful resource and I would love to hear from you on how you are getting on with your financial goal setting!
